Pain in Breast Due to Cancer

While abnormal and inexplicable pain is never a sign that everything is well within the body, that does not indicate the pain is an immediate sign of cancer. Breast pain can be caused by any number of things, such as accidents, normal hormone fluctuations and some prescription medications, so do not assume the worst unless it is paired with other corresponding symptoms or you have an unusually high risk of cancer from the start.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer affects one out of every eight women on average, but an individual's likelihood of developing this disease can be higher or lower depending on the presence of various risk factors associated with cancer. These include age (individuals over 50 have an increased risk), genetics (known defects in the BRAC1 and BRAC2 genes) and a family or personal history of breast cancer.

Cancer symptoms

The usual symptoms of breast cancer include changes in the size or shape of the breast, pus-like discharge from the nipple, and a lump located within the breast or the armpit. These are the traditional warning signs of breast cancer, so unless localized breast pain appears in conjunction with one or more of these, there is no likely cause for alarm.

Breast pain and cancer

According to the woman's health website WomentoWomen.com, breast pain is rarely a sign of breast cancer, as the initial stages of cancer are relatively pain-free. Where breast pain is an actual sign of the spread of cancer throughout the body, it is often associated not with the beginning stages but rather the more advanced stages of cancer. By this point, you would have likely noticed many other red flags (like the aforementioned symptoms) prior to the development of the breast pain itself.

Seeking medical aid

According to EMedicineHealth.com, medical attention is only necessary when the pain is prolonged for an unreasonable amount of time. Transient pain that appears and vanishes quickly is likely nothing, but repeated episodes of localized pain lasting for more than a few days should be investigated by your health-care practitioner.

Where breast pain is coupled with one or more risk factors for breast cancer, waiting for the pain to subside is not an option. If this is the case, make an appointment with your physician as soon as reasonably possible to have the underlying cause examined so that breast cancer can be ruled out as a possible diagnosis.

Treatments

Where breast pain is a direct result of cancer, several treatment options are available. According to the experts at Merek.com, a number of medications act to curb breast pain related to breast cancer by halting estrogen activity in the breast. As most cases of breast cancer are estrogen sensitive, this should work to alleviate symptoms. Common drugs used for this treatment include danazol and tamoxifen.

Breast Lobe Disorders

The most common type of breast lobe disorder is breast cancer. There are many varieties of breast cancer that are mainly divided into two types (localized and the kind that spreads to other parts of the body). Early detection is vital to treatment. As a result, self-exams, mammograms and biopsies are all but essential.

The Facts

Breasts are made up about 15 to 20 sections called lobes. Lobes are divided into lobules (even smaller sections), with tiny bulbs at the ends. These tiny bulbs are responsible for milk production. Lobes, lobules and bulbs are connected via ducts (small tubes that transport milk to the nipple).

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a general group of cancers called carcinomas. Breast cancer is classified as either infiltrating (invasive) or localized (in situ) carcinoma. Breast cancer is found in milk-producing tissues of the breast. Most originate in the ducts, but cancer cells in lobes and lobules are still common. Furthermore, according to the book "Diseases and Disorders," most carcinomas (about 80 percent) can be detected by a mammogram and, when detected early, are treatable.

Types

In situ breast cancer refers to cells that have not spread beyond their origination site (whether that is the lobule or the duct). The most common type is DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), according to MayoClinic.com. Infiltrating breast cancers invade the surrounding areas around the ducts and lobules and can travel to other parts of the body (such as the lymph nodes). The two varieties of infiltrating breast cancer are IDC (invasive ductal carcinoma)--which makes up about 70 percent of all breast cancers--and the much less common ILC (invasive lobular carcinoma).

LCIS

LCIS, or lobular carcinoma in situ, is a benign tumor that is sometimes confused with cancer. LCIS refers to a certain type of abnormal cell found in the lobule's lining, but it is not, however, classified as a cancer because there is no evidence that the abnormal cells spread like cancer. However, according to WomensHealthZone.net, individuals who are diagnosed with LCIS are at greater risk for developing breast cancer in the future.

Breast Cysts

Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs found within the breast. They develop in the lobes and are often described as oval or round lumps with distinct edges, according to MayoClinic.com. Breast cysts are common in women in their 30s and 40s and typically disappear after menopause. This type of breast disorder often does not require treatment unless the cysts grow to be particularly painful or large.

How to Get Stage 3 Breast Cancer Information

Breast cancer has become so common nearly everyone that hasn't had it knows someone who has. Everyone has healthy cells making up the body's tissue that grow, divide, and replace themselves. Sometimes cells can't control their growth. They begin growing too fast, make too much tissue, and form tumors. Some are benign and aren't a threat, but others are malignant and can kill nearby healthy tissue and organs. After your doctor diagnoses cancer, tests will be done to find out the size of the tumor and how far it has spread. In Stage III breast cancer, the tumor is larger than 5 centimeters (around 2 inches) and may have spread to lymph nodes under the arm or in the chest.

Instructions

How to Get Stage 3 Breast Cancer Information

    1

Ask an oncologist for information. An oncologist is a doctor who specializes in treating cancer. Your doctor will refer you to an oncologist after your diagnosis, and your oncologist will be your best source of information. If you have a preference for a certain specialist or medical facility that has an excellent success rate in treating Stage III breast cancer, ask your doctor to refer you.

    2

Call one of the many organizations that provide free information on Stage III breast cancer. The National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organization (888-80NABCO) provides information and assistance to anyone with questions about breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (800-462-9273) is a national organization that provides research, education, and culturally diverse information about breast cancer. The American Caner Society (800-227-2345) is a national community-based voluntary organization that tries to eliminate cancer through prevention, research, education, and service. The National Cancer Institute (800422-6237) offers a description of clinical trials available for women with breast cancer.

    3

Read one of the many books written to help people with breast cancer understand the disease. "The Breast Cancer Epidemic" by Dwight Thomas, M.D., "The Breast Cancer Journey Planner" by Carrie S. Sanders, and "Be a Survivor: Your Guide to Breast Cancer Treatment, Third Edition" by Vladimir Lange are just a few of the books that can give you information on Stage III breast cancer. Check your library for no-cost information.

    4

Visit a support group. Since 1 of 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, support groups to help people deal with cancer are available in almost every community. Other people who have been through Stage III breast cancer treatment can often give you the best information. Health care providers can help you find a support group in your area.

    5

Ask a social worker at your hospital or clinic for breast cancer programs near your home. They can refer you to local and national groups that can help you with information, financial aid, home care, transportation, and emotional support. Other staff members can also help you find information.
