Treatments for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer second leading cancer in number of deaths caused to women. In the United States, as many as 180,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, along with about 2,000 men. Treatments for breast cancer include surgeries to remove the cancerous cells, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted drug therapy and hormone therapy. Often the treatment for breast cancer is a combination of these methods.

Surgical options

A lumpectomy is a surgery to remove a cancerous tumor or lump with the goal of saving as much of the rest of the breast as can be saved, and to keep the cancer from spreading elsewhere in the patient. A lumpectomy is not a viable option for large tumors or for people who have cancer deep inside the tissue of the breast. A lumpectomy is followed up by radiation treatments to kill as much of the remaining cancer cells as possible. A radical mastectomy is a surgical procedure in which the whole breast is removed, including some of the lymph nodes under the arm where cancer may spread. Partial mastectomies take out the tumor and surrounding breast tissue, while a simple mastectomy sees all breast tissue removed.

Radiation treatment

Radiation therapy employs a high-energy type of X-ray to shrink a tumor in the breast and to destroy cancer cells. Radiation is often recommended for patients following breast cancer surgery. It normally will start three or four weeks after the surgery has been performed and last for six weeks with five treatments a week. These painless treatments are about a half hour long but side effects can include such symptoms as fatigue, tenderness in the breast region and nausea.

Chemotherapy

After surgery to remove breast cancer, some type of chemotherapy is often utilized. These cancer-killing treatments are administered to keep breast cancer from coming back and from spreading to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy comes with many side effects, as both cancer cells and healthy cells are affected by the drugs. Hair loss, tiredness and vomiting are frequently experienced by people undergoing chemotherapy. Other effects of this treatment include some loss of concentration and memory, with patients sometimes struggling to find the right word during a conversation.

Hormone therapy

Some types of breast cancer in women can be treated with hormone therapy to slow down the cancer's growth. Cancers of this nature make use of the estrogen and progesterone hormones in a woman's system to spread, but hormone therapy can block the cancer cells from making use of these substances. Medications such as Nolvadex, Femara and Arimidex are used to inhibit cancer cells from using estrogen. These drugs can potentially kill the cancer and reduce the size of tumors.

Targeted drug treatment

Certain drugs are designed to specifically target cancer cells and keep them from thriving. Avastin is one such drug. It has the ability to keep cancer cells from growing new blood vessels, which results in the death of the cell. Drugs such as Tykerb focus on a protein in cancer patients that has been linked to abnormal cell growth. Targeted drug therapy is commonly employed along with chemotherapy to stop the spread of the disease in breast cancer sufferers.

Breast Cancer Ribbon Tattoo Ideas

Breast Cancer Ribbon Tattoo Ideas

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, aside from non-melanoma skin cancer. Breast cancer is a disease that touches many people, and if it has made a significant impact in your life, a tattoo can be a good way to mark its touch. The pink ribbon is a symbol associated with breast cancer that is ideal for tattoo art.

Simple Pink Ribbon

The most basic pink ribbon tattoo to represent breast cancer is a flat depiction of a loop of pink ribbon. While this design is plain, it is also very evocative. This can be a good tattoo for someone who is looking for something simple, but meaningful. The pink ribbon can be outlined in black to make it stand out more, and it may have forked or pointed ends to give it some visual variety.

Memorial Tattoos

If your tattoo is meant to commemorate someone who passed away from breast cancer or who survived it, you may choose to get that person's name tattooed above or below the pink ribbon. You may also choose to have the name inscribed on the curve of the ribbon, where it will be more subtle. The person's name and date of birth or death can also tattooed onto a white scroll or a white ribbon around the pink ribbon.

Tribal Designs

Tribal tattoo designs are jagged and abstract. They may look a little like thorns, with sharp spiked outlines. You may choose to integrate a pink ribbon that weaves through the spikes and dark lines of a tribal tattoo, for an edgier vibe.

Linked Pink Ribbons

If breast cancer is an issue in your family or if you have had more than one friend who has had it, a pair of linked pink ribbons can be an evocative way to indicate how the disease has affected your life. The tattoo could be a pair of plain pink ribbons, or both ribbons could have names and dates inscribed on them.

Flowers

The looped pink ribbon that represents breast cancer can easily incorporate flowers. You may have a rose with its stem going through the loop, or you might have flower vines twining around the ribbon.

Final Stages of Breast Cancer

What Is Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the development of abnormal cells in the breast tissue. The disease is the most common cancer found among women. In the United States, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women. Breast cancer is detected through self-examination and via mammograms, a test performed by a physician. Breast cancer is most often seen in females within the age group 45 to 55. Although it is rare, breast cancer can form in the chest tissue of men and attributes to 1 percent of male cancer deaths.

Breast cancer's causes are considered a mixture of hormonal and genetic factors. With modern technology, there are numerous treatment options that are successful in detecting, controlling and eliminating breast cancer. Options include surgical removal of the cancerous tumor or the entire breast via mastectomy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy.

Stages

Breast cancer is broken into several stages based on its progression and recommended treatment options. The stages are the early stage or stage 0, Stage 1, Stage 2A, Stage 2B, Stages 3A, 3B, 3C and Stage 4.

In Stage 0, the cancer is detected and is still local to the breast with no signs of spreading to the lymph nodes. In Stage 1, the cancerous tumor is 2 cm or less in size but has not spread. In Stage 2A, the tumor is either still small in size but has interaction with the lymph nodes or the tumor is larger than 2 cm but less than 5 cm and has no lymph node connections. In Stage 2B, the cancer remains around 5 cm in size but still has no interaction with the lymph system. In Stage 3A, the tumor is grown beyond 5 cm and has spread to the lymph nodes. Stage 3B sees the breast cancer as a tumor of varying size that has spread to the skin, chest wall or lymph nodes within the mammary tissue. In Stage 3C, the cancer has spread wider and has advanced its involvement with the lymph nodes. In Stage 4, the cancer, despite its size, has spread far from the breast and has spread to the bones, liver, brain, lungs or other lymph nodes throughout the body.

Final Stages & Treatment

In the final stages in which the cancer has metastasized (spread throughout), the disease has most likely reached the bone. At this stage, breast cancer is considered incurable. Treatment options adjust to control the disease and slow its progression throughout the body.

Treatment options include surgery and or radiation therapy for the tumors in the breast tissue. Chemotherapy and or hormonal therapy is considered also in the final stages of breast cancer. Cancer drugs and steroids are also brought into play to attempt to slow or even shrink the tumor and spread of the disease. While it was once highly fatal to have reached the final stages of breast cancer, modern medical breakthroughs and treatments have not only extended lives but seen cancer remission due to more recent treatment options.
