When Dorothy Hamill won an Olympic gold medal for ice-skating, she earned the title of America's Sweetheart. To fight her breast cancer, Dorothy underwent surgery and radiation, according to Life Extension magazine. Tired and fatigued, she complied with her doctors' suggestions that she take vitamin D. She supplemented that with a healthy diet featuring seafood. "I eat lots of fish," Dorothy declared. "I generally eat healthy but I'm more aware of what I should be eating now than before." To help others follow her lead, Dorothy participated in a public service announcement featuring the role of diet in reducing the risk of and battling recurrence breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Project. The Womens Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS) demonstrated that breast cancer survivors who cut their fat intake and increase their fruit and vegetable intake reduce their recurrence rate by 24 percent, according to WINS.
Now, Dorothy reflected recently to People magazine, she understands that "there is no magic pill" when it comes to conquering breast cancer. "It's exercise, eat well. You have to do a little of this, a little of that. There is no magic wand." And she's written a book about her life and triumphs on the ice as well as with her health, entitled "A Skating Life: My Story."
