Breast Cancer - Warning Signs & Symptoms

Carcinoma of the breast, commonly referred to as breast cancer, is a malignant tumor that grows in and around the tissue of the breast. Usually, breast cancer starts its growth in the milk ducts or the glands within the breast.

Early Warning Signs

The first sign of breast cancer typically is a lump in the breast or near the armpit.

Symptoms

A change in a breast's normal appearance, such as dimpling and changes in size and texture, are indications of possible breast cancer.

Diagnosis

Often a lump in the breast is detected though self examination of the breast, or by a physical examination by your physician. In many cases, breast cancer is detected though a mammogram. Additionally, a breast biopsy of the mass can determine breast cancer.

Treatment

Breast cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy drugs and radiation therapy.

Risk

If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are at a greater risk of developing breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Survivor Support

Breast Cancer Survivor Support

Every year 185,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. Survival rates are increasing due to earlier detection, and as of 2008 there are 2.5 million women in the U.S. who have survived breast cancer. After diagnosis, treatment and survival, women are often left feeling overwhelmed by their experience. Support groups are available to survivors of breast cancer to aid them in their emotional recovery from the disease.

Definition

A support group is a place where people who have similar experiences can go to receive emotional and practical support and exchange information. The purpose of the group is to provide a frame of reference for feelings and to connect to other survivors in a positive way.

Benefits

Women who have survived breast cancer can offer empathy in a way that others can not. A support group can provide survivors with the knowledge that they are not going through this alone, which can be a great source of comfort. Aside from emotional benefits, survivors can receive practical information about ongoing medical treatments or advice on paying medical bills.

Local Support Groups

Find a breast cancer support group in your area by making a few phone calls. Check with your local hospital about support groups that they sponsor. Your oncologist can most likely provide information. Local libraries might have a list of support groups in your area. Survivors can call the National Cancer Institute's Information Service line at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237) to find support groups.

Online Support Groups

There are many online support groups, such as the Pink Ribbon Girls and Breast Friends, that can provide survivor support. These support websites often host message boards where survivors can post questions or their thoughts and receive feedback from other members. Some online support groups host events where members can meet in person.

What to Look for in a Support Group

While breast cancer survivors have different needs, there are some universal qualities of a well-functioning group. A good support group will have up-to-date reliable information and hold regular meetings or provide regular newsletters. Strong leadership as well as a clearly stated confidentiality policy is essential to a good survivor group.

Prognosis of Breast Cancer That has Spread to the Lungs

Making a breast cancer prognosis isn't always a simple cut-and-dried process. This is also true for breast cancer that has spread to the lungs. Several factors can affect the prognosis, according to the American Cancer Society. Those factors can include age, health, and tumor characteristics (see Resource 1).

Breast Cancer

Almost one out of every eight women is likely to get breast cancer during her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Institute, and one out of every 35 is likely to die from it (see Resource 2). In addition, in the United States, breast cancer is the second-most common cancer (after skin cancer). But breast cancer can spread into other parts of the body, affecting the prognosis.

Prognosis and Breast Cancer

To provide a breast cancer patient with the most accurate prognosis for recovery --- and the best treatment options --- a doctor must evaluate how far the cancer has spread within the breast as well as the rest of the body. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, knowing the breast cancer stage will be a major factor in prognosis determination.

Sometimes the breast cancer stage is arrived at through a biopsy, a physical exam or a test (known as a clinical stage). Other times it is arrived at through testing results coupled with actual surgery (known as the pathologic stage).

Prognosis and the Cancer Stage Classification

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) is credited with developing the breast cancer classification system TNM (tumor, nodes, metastasis). This system is used to help analyze breast cancer by tumor size (T), whether it has infiltrated the lymph nodes --- and how many lymph nodes have been infected if it has (N), as well as its recognized spread into organs within the body (M).

Letters (TNM) and numbers (Stage 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) are used in this classification system and aid doctors in classifying each type and stage of breast cancer. For example, the letter M and the Stage IV represent breast cancer that has metastasized into an organ of the body, like the lungs.

Prognosis Factors and Validity

But just knowing the breast cancer stage isn't all the doctor will consider when determining a patient's prognosis for breast cancer that has spread to the lungs or elsewhere. Doctors generally also consider other factors, too (age, overall health, tumor characteristics) before making a prognosis, especially for breast cancer that has spread to the lungs.

Prognosis

The American Cancer Society lists breast cancer that spreads into the lung (or any other organ) as a Stage IV cancer --- and that type of cancer has an estimated five-year survival rate of 20 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER).

But an individual may have a better prognosis than this 1988 to 2001 database-generated statistic, according to the American Cancer Society. This is because doctors don't make the prognosis based on statistics; they make it based on many factors, and each individual's case (and cancer characteristics) is different.
