Burst Blood Vessel

Bursting of the blood vessels can be divided into two forms. The most common bruising normally appears purplish in color. In the other case, there appears a blood spot under the skin and looks like red spreading of cells. At this point, it is important to note, that a blood vessel can also burst in the brain and have serious consequences like speech disruption, double vision, numbness, tingling sensation in different parts of the body, weakness and headaches.

Treatment Options for A Burst Blood Vessel

Treating a blood vessel that has burst will depend on the location of the blood vessel. Normally, minor injuries caused to the skin do not require any specific treatment. They heal on their own within 2 or 3 weeks. If you want to quicken the recovery process, you can apply pressure to the area, which will help in preventing any further damage to the area.

The other treatment option is the use of cold compress. Apply the cold compress for a couple of minutes, every 2 to 3 hours. It will also relieve the pressure in the affected area. It is normally seen that it heals on its own and do not take as long for the blood spots to heal. The only main tip which you should keep in mind, when you are treating broken blood vessel is, that if you are taking any kind of blood thinners, stop taking them with immediate effect.

One can also mix 4 drops of essential oil with 10 ounces of a moisturizer and apply the same on the affected part. This will have to be applied 2 to 3 times in a day.

Vitamin C and Vitamin K creams also helps in healing the condition. Initially apply vitamin C cream and once it is well absorbed into the skin, apply vitamin K cream before bed time.

If there is permanent damage caused to the blood vessel, you may have to see the health care professional. In such cases, medications are normally injected into the broken blood vessel. This in turn takes care that the affected blood vessel and it does not shrink or disappear. These days, laser treatment is also used to treat this condition. Many people choose this option over the other, because it is less painful than the other treatment options.

What Causes Blood Vessels to Burst?

An important fact about both types of blood vessels is, if they are caused as a result of trauma, they are purple in color, whereas if they are blood spots, they are due to malnutrition, certain medications, disease, etc. A blood vessel can also burst without any sort of trauma. This is often the case with old people, as the skin loses its flexibility and is more prone to bruising with advancing age. At the same time, they are more commonly seen in women as compared to men. Although this problem is seen as the person grows older, blood spots can also be seen in the younger generation. People who suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes are also known to be more prone to it.

Burst eye blood vessel is caused when a tiny blood vessel underneath the surface of the eye breaks and this is also known as subconjunctival hemorrhage. Not always is trauma the cause of a blood vessel bursting in the eye. In some cases, blood vessel in eye may burst due to powerful sneezing or cough, vomiting, rubbing of the eyes, straining, crying, etc. A person gets to know of the condition only when he looks in to the mirror and finds the white part of the eye has turned bright red. The eye can look frightening and painful however, it is usually a harmless condition. In rare cases, there can be pain and mild irritation. It takes anywhere between 10 to 14 days to heal.

Additional Info

Burst blood vessel is more of a cosmetic problem. Although a blood vessel in any part of the body can break, this condition often affects the eyes. Often the person does not realize, that a blood vessel has burst, unless he stands in front of a mirror. The sclera (the white part of the eye) turns red, when a blood vessel breaks. When it affects other parts of the body, there is a purplish welt with blood spot appearing on the welt. In some cases, there may be red spreading of cells. It is caused due to trauma like bumps, bangs and bruises, which cause the blood vessel to rupture. It can also be caused due to aging process of the skin. This normally happens in the facial area.

Very often a blood vessel that has burst is easily visible, as the blood vessel is situated under a transparent layer of skin. These blood vessels can either be bright red or dark in appearance. The burst blood vessels can cause pain, if they come in contact with anything. If they were not located in the visibly prominent area, they would go unnoticed. It can occur in any part of the body, inclusive of the eyes. If you have varicose veins, they can cause blood vessels in the leg to burst. This blood vessel burst can be scary.

In most cases, the blood vessel is able to heal itself in a few days. If you are in doubt about having injured a blood vessel, you should see your health care professional without any delay. If there has been a trauma which has caused this condition, you will not want to take any sort of risks. In case there is bleeding, you should get yourself examined from your doctor, to avoid any complications.
