Women diagnosed with breast cancer that is caught early have a very good chance of survival, with proper treatment. According to the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, mortality related to breast cancer has dropped steadily since the 1990s. The National Cancer Institute reports that each year, 192,370 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and 1,910 new cases are diagnosed in men. As of 2009, each year 40,170 women die of breast cancer and 440 men die of breast cancer. Because 60 percent of cases are diagnosed in the early stages, and 100 percent of women diagnosed with Stage I or II breast cancer survive five years from diagnosis, the odds are fairly good that you will survive breast cancer with proper treatment.
Treatments
Treatment for breast cancer varies depending on how advanced the cancer is. Surgery is usually involved: either a lumpectomy or mastectomy. A mastectomy removes the whole breast, while a lumpectomy removes only part of the breast. If the cancer is contained to a small area, a lumpectomy is usually just as effective as a mastectomy at treating the cancer. Other treatments may accompany the surgery, such as chemotherapy, radiation and estrogen blockers.
Stage 0 and I Survival
Stage 0 breast cancer is breast cancer that is only in a very small part of the ducts of the breast. It is not invasive. Stage I breast cancer is the first stage of invasive breast cancer. The cancer has begun to get into the tissue of the breast. Surgery and radiation is usually recommended for Stage 0 and Stage I breast cancer. Usually, a lumpectomy can remove the cancer, but some women choose to have a mastectomy to prevent risk of relapse or out of fear that a lumpectomy won't remove all of the cancer cells. Radiation may follow the surgery. For Stage 0 and 1, the five-year survival rate is 100 percent. This means that 100 percent of women live at least five years after diagnosis (these statistics account for the fact that some women may die of unrelated causes).
Stage II
Stage II treatment is very similar to Stage I treatment: surgery and radiation. Sometimes, with Stage II cancer women might have radiation before having surgery to shrink the cancer to make it small enough to remove the entire cancer. Women who are diagnosed and treated for Stage II cancer have an 86 percent five-year survival rate.
Stage III
Stage III breast cancer, like Stage I and II, involves surgery and radiation. The surgery may be more invasive, and may include removal of some of the lymph nodes under the arm (axillary lymph nodes) if the cancer has spread there. Women with Stage III breast cancer usually also have chemotherapy treatments as well. The five-year survival rate for Stage III breast cancer drops to 57 percent, even with treatment.
Stage IV
Once the cancer spreads to other parts of the body outside of the breast, it is called Stage IV breast cancer. It may also be called metastatic breast cancer. Treatment can't cure Stage IV breast cancer in most cases. Some women still have treatments, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and estrogen blockers, in order to live longer. However, even with treatment, the five-year survival rate for Stage IV breast cancer is 20 percent.
