Prognosis of Breast Cancer by Stage ~ Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer affecting either the ducts or lobes of the breast. There are five stages of breast cancer, each with a different survival prognosis. This article is based on the findings of the American Cancer Society, and takes into account the fact that these cancer patients may die within five years from other causes.

During this stage, abnormal cells have just been found in the breast tissue. The five-year survival rate for cancer patients in this stage is 100%.

In Stage I, the abnormal cells have become cancerous but are located only in the breast. The survival rate for patients during this stage is also 100%.

Stage II breast cancer is divided into Stage IIA and Stage IIB. The tumor is most likely growing and found in lymph nodes. The five-year survival rate now decreases to 86%.

There are three subsections of Stage III breast cancer. The cancer is probably not only in the breast and lymph nodes but in the chest wall. The survival rate drops to 57% for patients whose cancer is found in this stage.

In Stage IV of breast cancer, the cancer has spread to other organs of the body such as the liver or lungs. The survival rate decreases to 20% for this stage of the cancer.
