Prognosis of Terminal Breast Cancer

Prognosis of Terminal Breast Cancer

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is a common fear for most women, who may think about pain, surgery, disfigurement, drugs and, ultimately, death. Unfortunately, when a cancer has progressed to a terminal stage, that is often the truth. Breast cancer, a malignant tumor that starts from cells in the breast, is the second most lethal cancer for women.

Breast Cancer

The Mayo Clinic reports that every year more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and every year nearly 40,000 women will die from the disease. It cannot be emphasized enough that early detection is very important with this disease, because the earlier it is diagnosed the better the prognosis.

Staging Breast Cancer

Staging cancer, defined as stages 0 to 5, is the process of finding how widespread the cancer is at diagnosis. This process allows the patient and medical staff to better organize and comprehend different aspects of the disease. It can help the individual better understand the prognosis, help predict the course the cancer is likely to take, guide treatment decisions and provide a common approach for medical professionals to describe the various degrees of breast cancer.

Stage IV Breast Cancer

Stage IV, considered the later or advanced stage, refers to breast cancer that has already metastasized or spread to other parts of the body when it is first diagnosed. The cancer can be any size, found in the bone, liver, brain or lung, and may or may not have spread to nearby lymph nodes.

Treatment

During advanced breast cancer, the patient must understand if the doctor is trying to eliminate the disease or just to prevent or manage symptoms. Further treatment will depend on previous treatments, where the cancer is located and a woman's age, general health and desire to continue the medical procedures.

Stage IV treatment may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy or targeted therapy which interferes with cancer cell growth and function. Radiation therapy and/or surgery may be used in certain situations to prevent bone fractures or blockage in the liver, provide pain relief or treat a small number of metastases in a targeted area.

Prognosis

Early detection and new treatments have improved survival rates. However, the prognosis is not favorable for someone diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute reports that at this stage an individual has a 20 percent five-year survival rate. Terminally ill individuals may experience fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation and delirium. It is important that they receive much care and comfort during their final days.
