Breast cancer is a scary disease that affects a vast number of women (and men). Through community-building fundraisers, not only are researchers equipped with the funds they need to learn more about treatments and cures, everybody touched by this disease is able to join forces, build relationships and learn how to fight.
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the development of malignant cells in the breast tissue. It is the second most-common form of cancer for women in the United States, second only to skin cancer. Each year, an estimated 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer, and approximately 40,000 die. Breast cancer also affects men. Approximately 1,700 are diagnosed each year, and nearly 450 die annually. The causes of breast cancer largely remain unknown, although it is inherited in some cases.
Research
Thousands of research projects for decades have strived to find out more about where breast cancer comes from, how to prevent it and how to stop it if it has already infected a patient. Susan G. Komen for the Cure has funded more than 1,800 studies over a 26-year period - more, they say, than the U.S. government provides. Health programs, including mammogram awareness, play a huge part in controlling the presence of breast cancer, and because there is not yet a cure, early detection is the No. 1 way to fight the deadly disease.
Organizations
There are numerous organizations that raise funds for breast-cancer research, including the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure. NBCF focuses on educating the public and raising morale in the fight against breast cancer. It funds free mammograms and supports the country's leading breast-cancer research. Komen for the Cure, founded by the sister of a breast-cancer victim, has raised more than $1 billion in research funds since its inception in 1982. ACS is a program that covers all cancers, and has its own breast-cancer division. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation focuses mainly on research, spending 85 cents on the dollar for the cause.
Types of Events
Komen Race for the Cure is a very popular fundraiser for breast-cancer research. The walk consists of more than 60 miles over an extended weekend. After registration, participants walk and train together. Over the course of the event, participants bond over stories and interests and are easily spotted in their unique accessories, almost always involving the color pink and the iconic pink ribbon. The public gets involved by donating money, and many businesses encourage their employees to participate in the community-wide events. The ACS hosts an annual walk as well, with community-building and fundraising being the main components.
Money raised
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation has raised more than $225 million since its inception, and $39.5 million in the 2007-2008 fiscal year. This money is issued to research institutions annually (usually in October) in the form of grants. In 2008, Komen announced the granting of an unprecedented $100 million to put breast-cancer research on the "fast track." Komen is the largest nonprofit provider of breast-cancer funding in the world. NBCF has raised more than $55 million since its inception in 1994, and the majority of it is for mammograms.
