Localization & Breast Cancer Prognosis

According to the American Cancer Society, breast is the second most common type of cancer in women in the United States. In the United States, women have a 1 in 35 chance that their breast cancer will cause death. Several factors contribute to a breast cancer prognosis. A diagnosis of localized breast cancer does not always mean a bad prognosis.

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the out of control growth of your breast cells. When these cells clump together they form tumors. Cancerous tumors can grow and invade your normal tissue. Breast cancer can spread to other organs in your body. There is no known cause of breast cancer.

Localized Cancer

Localized breast cancer is an early stage of breast cancer. This type of cancer originates in your breast tissue and has not spread to any surrounding tissue or organs. Early stages of breast cancer include stage 0, 1 and 2. Stage 0 breast cancer is the existence of a few cells of cancer. Stage 1 and 2 involves tumors that are under 5 cm in size. Localized breast cancer can be effectively treated.

Prognosis

The prognosis of a your breast cancer is determined by several factors. Your prognosis is how long your doctor expects you to live given your diagnosis of breast cancer. Your doctor will consider your diagnosis, your social environment, your family medical history and biological factors such as the tumor size and stage of cancer. The general prognosis for localized breast cancer is high. The sooner cancer is found and treated the greater your chances for survival.

Treatment

Localized breast cancer is most commonly treated with surgery. Due to the relative small size of localized tumors and that the cancer has not spread make surgery an effective treatment. A lumpectomy is a procedure in which a surgeon will remove the tumor from your breast. Lumpectomies allow your surgeon to remove the tumor without removing a large amount of breast tissue. Often surgery is the only treatment needed.

Prevention/Solution

Early detection is the best tool to fighting all types of cancer. It is recommended that you begin performing self breast exams and getting clinical breast exams in your 20s. If you are at a high risk for breast cancer due to family history or past medical history discuss additional prevention options with your doctor.
